Stopping the Guesswork: Real-Time Brake Monitoring Arrives
SAF-HOLLAND has officially launched BrakeSight™, a new technology designed to take the guesswork out of brake maintenance. This system is made specifically for Haldex ModulT air disc brakes. It works on both the front part of the truck (the tractor) and the back part (the trailer). By tracking wear as it happens, BrakeSight helps truck fleets stay safe and save money.
How BrakeSight Tracks Wear
BrakeSight does not just guess when brakes are old. It provides continuous, real-time monitoring of how much the brake pads and rotors have worn down. The system works by measuring the movement of the brake adjustment mechanism. This part of the brake moves automatically as the pads get thinner to make sure the brakes still grip correctly.
BrakeSight takes that small movement and turns it into a simple percentage. This tells a fleet manager exactly how much “life” is left at each wheel. Instead of waiting for a manual inspection, the truck sends this data directly to the office.
Smart Technology and Integration
The system uses a smart sensor built right into the brake caliper. This sensor is linked to an electronic control unit (ECU) mounted on the truck’s frame. The data is sent through a “CAN communication” system, which is basically the truck’s internal computer network.
Because BrakeSight is J1939-compliant, it plays well with others. It is designed to work with almost any fleet telematics platform. This means companies do not have to buy a specific brand of tracking software to use it. They can see their brake health on the screens they already use every day.
Built to Last in Tough Conditions
Trucks go through rain, snow, and mud, so BrakeSight is built to be “truck tough.” The sensor is housed in a special casing that is ultrasonically welded shut. It has an IP6K9K rating, which is a fancy way of saying it can be sprayed with high-pressure hot water during a truck wash and still work perfectly.
The system can handle extreme weather, too. It works in temperatures as cold as -40°C (-40°F) and as hot as +125°C (257°F). SAF-HOLLAND is so confident in its durability that the sensor comes with a warranty for three years or 350,000 miles.
Better Maintenance and Lower Costs
The main goal of BrakeSight is to stop “reactive” maintenance. Usually, brakes are fixed after they break or during a scheduled check-up that might be too early or too late. Mike Ginocchio, a Vice President at SAF-HOLLAND, noted that rotor damage is very expensive but also very preventable.
By using BrakeSight, fleets can:
-
Plan Ahead: Schedule repairs based on actual wear, not just a calendar date.
-
Save Money: Avoid “metal-on-metal” contact that destroys expensive rotors.
-
Reduce Downtime: Keep trucks on the road by fixing brakes before they fail unexpectedly.
Easy Upgrades for Existing Fleets
One of the best parts of this new system is how easy it is to install. All Haldex ModulT air disc brake calipers already come with a built-in spot to mount the sensor. This means fleets can add BrakeSight to their current trucks without having to buy entirely new brake parts. It can be installed when a new truck is built or added later as an upgrade.
