Zonar Achieves First-Ever CARB Clean Truck Certification

Last Updated: March 4, 2026By

The regulatory landscape in California is famous for its complexity, but a new technological milestone is finally offering some relief for fleet managers. Zonar recently announced it has become the first telematics provider to receive a specific Executive Order from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). This certification officially approves their system for the Clean Truck Check (CTC) program, a move that could save your fleet from a logistical nightmare.

Why This Certification Matters Now

As of early 2026, California has significantly tightened its grip on heavy-duty emissions. The Clean Truck Check now requires most non-gasoline vehicles over 14,000 pounds to undergo emissions testing twice a year. If you miss a deadline, the consequences are swift. You could face DMV registration holds or fines reaching $10,000 per day. For a new manager, the traditional method of compliance—scheduling physical shop visits for manual smoke opacity tests—is a massive drain on time and money.

Turning Trucks Into Mobile Testing Labs

The new certification allows Zonar’s V4 telematics control unit to act as a continuously connected remote diagnostic tool. Instead of pulling a truck off its route to visit a certified tester, the hardware already installed in the cab does the work. It scans the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system and sends the data over-the-air directly to CARB’s database. This “set it and forget it” approach ensures you never miss a 90-day compliance window.

Preparing for a Quarterly Future

While twice-yearly testing is the current standard, the industry is already looking toward October 2027. At that point, CARB will increase the testing frequency to four times per year for OBD-equipped vehicles. Managing quarterly manual inspections for a large fleet would be nearly impossible without automation. By adopting certified telematics now, you are future-proofing your operations against the next wave of regulatory hurdles.
