New Data Reveals 52% Spike in Near-Collisions & Driver Risks

Last Updated: October 15, 2025By

A new report from a leading fleet safety provider delivers a critical alert to all fleet professionals: collision risks are still escalating, and driver behavior remains the primary cause. This information emphasizes that fleet managers must intensify proactive coaching efforts. The comprehensive Lytx 2025 Road Safety Report analyzed over 300 billion miles of driving data across its global database. The key findings reveal shifting risk patterns that demand immediate attention from your team. You should incorporate these insights into your next safety briefing.

The Rising Tide of Near-Collisions

The data revealed a disturbing spike in close calls across the industry. Specifically, “near collisions” increased by an alarming 52% when comparing Q4 2024 to Q4 2023. This jump indicates roads are becoming more congested and volatile. These close calls serve as vital, real-time indicators for future accidents. Consequently, ignoring these events means accepting higher liability risk later. While industry-wide collision rates rose, fleets utilizing Lytx technology observed a noteworthy reduction in severe collision levels, therefore confirming the value of AI-powered coaching.

Coaching Strategies for Core Violations

The report isolated several persistent and dangerous driving habits. Following too closely, using a handheld device, and speeding continue to rank as the top risky behaviors. In addition, speeding violations increased by 9% year-over-year. Following distance violations (less than one second) also rose by 19%, highlighting a widespread policy challenge. Fleet managers must reinforce following distance standards immediately.

Furthermore, weather remains a major contributing factor. Driving “too fast for conditions” made drivers four times more likely to be involved in a serious incident. Fog, for example, was identified as the most dangerous weather condition overall. Winter driving also carries double the collision risk compared to other seasons. Therefore, specific, seasonal coaching is highly effective. Peter Goldwasser, Executive Director at Together for Safer Roads, noted that better understanding and proactive management of these new patterns of risk are critical for fleets.

Operational Benefits of Proactive Safety

Addressing high-risk behavior produces safety gains and operational efficiencies. Lytx clients achieved an 8.7% reduction in time spent speeding per vehicle during 2024. This change did not just reduce liability. Moreover, this reduction in aggressive driving helped these fleets decrease their overall fuel costs. By focusing on fundamental safety violations, managers can effectively improve the bottom line while protecting their drivers and assets.
