New York City Announces Fleet Safety Upgrades
New York City’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has unveiled its latest Safe Fleet Transition Plan Update . This updated plan focuses on integrating new safety technologies into the city’s fleet to help prevent accidents and protect vulnerable road users. For example, the city will now equip 200 trucks with audible turning alerts, which will warn pedestrians and cyclists when a vehicle is making a turn. Furthermore, Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology, which reduced speeding incidents by 64% in a pilot program, has been elevated to a best practice.
The report also highlights the adoption of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) as a best practice for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. This technology helps prevent collisions by automatically applying the brakes when a potential crash is detected. These proactive measures align with the city’s broader Vision Zero initiative. By investing in these proven technologies, the city is setting a high standard for fleet safety and showing a commitment to protecting its residents.
