OEMs Pivot to High-Efficiency Vocational Tech as Market Cools

The early weeks of 2026 have brought a distinct shift in strategy for North American truck and trailer manufacturers. While the long-haul sector continues to navigate a rebalancing phase, OEMs are doubling down on the vocational and regional markets to drive growth. Recent reports from ACT Research indicate that while tractor inventory is finally reaching healthy levels, the vocational segment—covering everything from dump trucks to concrete pumpers—remains the industry’s primary baseline for demand. This focus was on full display at the World of Concrete 2026, where Mack Trucks and other leading brands debuted specialized technology designed to improve site safety and operational transparency.

Mack and Volvo Standardize Driver-Centric Tech

Mack Trucks recently reinforced its commitment to the vocational sector by debuting an all-new instrument cluster for the Mack TerraPro. This update introduces “Co-Pilot,” a high-resolution display that provides drivers with real-time feedback on vehicle health and task-specific metrics. Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks North America has continued its safety leadership, with the Volvo FH again securing the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP. For fleet maintenance directors, these advancements represent a move toward “idiot-proof” maintenance, as integrated sensors now alert drivers to minor faults before they escalate into costly job-site failures.

Trailer Manufacturers Seek Relief via Antidumping Petitions

The trailer market is currently embroiled in a significant legal battle that could reshape equipment costs for years to come. A coalition of major U.S. manufacturers, including Wabash and Great Dane, has filed petitions with the Department of Commerce seeking steep duties on dry van and refrigerated trailers imported from Mexico, Canada, and China. These manufacturers argue that foreign “dumping” has artificially suppressed prices and harmed domestic production.
