Trailer Market Shows Rebound as Major Brands Innovate
Trailer Orders Are Rising Again
The trailer market is finally showing signs of life after a slow period. Recent data from ACT Research shows that trailer orders jumped 9% compared to last year. While the market is still a bit uneven, many fleet owners are starting to buy again.
A big reason for this change is aging equipment. Many fleets waited to buy new trailers over the last few years to save money. Now, those older trailers are becoming expensive to fix. Steve Bennett, the president of Utility Trailer, noted that dealers are even starting to run out of new refrigerated and dry van inventory.
New Technology for Safety and Health
Trailer makers are not just building the same old boxes. They are adding “smart” features to help drivers and managers. For example, Great Dane recently showed off a new smart trailer concept.
This system checks things like tire pressure and door sensors automatically. It even tracks how weight is spread across the trailer. This helps drivers pass inspections faster and stay safe on the road. Furthermore, Great Dane added a special coating to their refrigerated trailers. This coating fights bacteria and odors, which is great for hauling food.
The Cost of Tariffs and Trade
Even though business is picking up, there are still challenges. Domestic trailer makers are worried about cheap imports from other countries. A group called the American Trailer Manufacturers Coalition is asking the government to look into unfair trade from China and Mexico.
At the same time, the cost of building trailers is going up. Tariffs on aluminum have caused prices to double for some manufacturers. Because of these higher costs, fleet managers should look at their budgets carefully. Investing in high-quality trailers with better safety guards and smart sensors may cost more now, but it can save money on repairs and insurance later.
