Class 8 Orders Skyrocket: A Sign of Recovery or Just a Pre-Buy?

Last Updated: January 13, 2026By

The trucking industry just received a jolt of potentially good news to start the year. According to preliminary data from FTR Transportation Intelligence, North American Class 8 truck orders skyrocketed in December 2025 to 42,200 units.

This isn’t just a minor bump; it represents a massive 108% increase over the previous month and a 21% jump year-over-year. It is the highest level of orders the industry has seen since October 2022, blowing past the 10-year December average of roughly 29,000 units.

What is Fueling the Surge?

While seeing orders double in a single month might look like a sudden boom in freight demand, FTR analysts suggest the reality is more nuanced. The surge appears to be driven by clarity over confusion.

For months, fleets have been hesitant to order new equipment due to uncertainty surrounding new tariffs and upcoming emissions regulations. However, recent clarifications have eased those fears:

  • Tariffs: The Section 232 tariffs implemented in November turned out to be less severe than many fleets feared.

  • EPA 2027 Rules: Word leaked just before Thanksgiving that the EPA plans to revise its 2027 NOx rule. The expected changes would keep the 2027 start date but eliminate costly extended warranty requirements, making the new trucks slightly less of a financial risk than previously thought.

Is This a Full Recovery?

Not quite yet. Dan Moyer, FTR’s senior analyst for commercial vehicles, warns that despite this order spike, the underlying fundamentals of the market remain tough.

“Freight demand remains soft, fleet profitability is constrained, and capital spending discipline persists amid rising costs,” Moyer noted.

Essentially, December’s boom is likely a mix of fleets finally placing orders they had deferred all year, combined with the early stages of a “pre-buy” ahead of the 2027 regulations. Fleets are locking in trucks now to avoid the uncertainty and higher costs of the next generation of compliant vehicles.

The Takeaway for Fleets

If you have been waiting on the sidelines to upgrade your equipment, you aren’t alone. The floodgates have opened, and order slots are filling up fast. While a full economic recovery may still be on the horizon, the race to secure equipment before 2027 has officially begun.
