Mack Delivers First LR Electric for Bronx Initiative
Mack Trucks announced a milestone delivery of its first Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle to Royal Waste Services in New York City. The delivery marks a key step in the “The Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point” project, a groundbreaking initiative focused on deploying clean transportation solutions in one of the city’s most underserved communities.
The project is supported by a $10 million award from the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, administered by NYSERDA. It aims to address significant environmental challenges in Hunts Point, an area impacted by heavy truck traffic from the nation’s largest wholesale food hub and nine waste transfer facilities.
The next-generation LR Electric delivered to Royal Waste, a Waste Connections subsidiary, features an enhanced 376 kWh battery capacity and twin electric motors producing 448 continuous horsepower. The deployment is supported by crucial infrastructure development, with MN8 Energy selected to build Hunts Point’s first freight-focused EV charging depot. The initiative’s comprehensive scope also includes the delivery of four medium-duty Mack MD electric trucks to the Fulton Fish Market.
This collaboration between Mack, Royal Waste, and New York state agencies demonstrates a tangible model for electrifying refuse fleets while advancing environmental equity and supporting New York’s goal of an 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
