Pep Boys Releases “Worst Roads in America” Report — What Fleet Managers Need to Know
Pep Boys has released its first-ever Worst Roads in America report, highlighting the U.S. metro areas where road conditions lead to the highest rates of alignment, suspension, and tire-related repairs. For fleet managers, the findings offer valuable insight into which regions place the greatest strain on vehicles — and what proactive steps can help protect uptime and control maintenance costs.
Drawing from internal service data collected between September 2024 and September 2025, Pep Boys analyzed repair trends across its operating markets. The results show that metro areas with extreme weather, dense traffic, and ongoing construction consistently see above-average repair frequency. For fleets operating in these environments, the impact can translate into more downtime, higher tire spend, and accelerated wear across critical components.
The Top Metro Areas for Road-Related Repairs
Pep Boys ranked 30 metro areas with the highest rates of road-related service needs. The top of the list includes:
-
Orlando, FL
-
Chicago, IL
-
Panama City, FL
-
Lafayette, IN
-
Tampa–St. Petersburg, FL

Spotlight: Orlando & Chicago
Orlando, ranked #1, shows elevated levels of alignment and suspension work, plus frequent single-tire replacements — a pattern consistent with heavy commuter traffic, expanding construction zones, and variable soil conditions. Fleets operating in Central Florida may see increased wear, especially on steering and suspension components.
In Chicago, winter remains a defining factor. Freeze-thaw cycles contribute to potholes, wheel damage, and higher rates of tire replacement and balancing services. Seasonal spikes in winter-related repairs make proactive inspections especially critical for Midwest fleets.
“Understanding repair trends helps drivers and businesses take preventive steps that extend vehicle life and reduce costly downtime,” said Scott Elliott, Manager of Technical Training at Pep Boys.
How Fleets Can Stay Ahead
Fleets in high-impact markets can reduce unexpected repairs by prioritizing:
-
Frequent tire inspections and proper inflation
-
Routine wheel alignments
-
Regular suspension checks
-
Enrollment in road hazard protection plans
